How a Mini-Split Installation Should Go in a New Orleans Home

A mini-split gets sold as the simple option. No ductwork, one unit on the wall, finished in a day. The equipment really is simpler than a ducted system, but the install still decides whether you end up with a quiet, dry room or a unit that runs in short bursts and never quite pulls the humidity down.

Sizing is where most of that gets settled. The Air Conditioning Contractors of America publishes Manual J, the only residential load calculation procedure recognized by the American National Standards Institute, and its position on oversized equipment is direct: a system with more capacity than the space needs short cycles, which leaves indoor air cold and clammy and wears the equipment down. In a hot-humid climate, which is how the U.S. Department of Energy classifies New Orleans, that costs you more comfort than it would somewhere dry.

What follows is that sequence, in the order it should happen, and what changes at each step because the house sits in southeast Louisiana.

Why Does Sizing Decide How Well a Mini-Split Works?

A mini-split has two jobs here. It has to bring the temperature down, and it has to take water out of the air. The second one only happens while the system is actually running, because moisture condenses on a cold coil over time rather than instantly.

That’s why capacity and comfort aren’t the same thing. A unit with more output than the room needs reaches the thermostat setting fast, shuts off, and restarts a short while later. ACCA describes the result plainly: short cycling gives you air that’s cold and clammy, and a system that doesn’t run long enough to condense moisture out of the air.

An undersized unit fails the opposite way. It runs more or less constantly and still never catches up on the hottest afternoons. Neither problem can be corrected afterwards with a setting, which is why this is step one and not an afterthought.

What a Load Calculation Actually Reads

A load calculation isn’t square footage multiplied by a number off a chart. Manual J reads the things that genuinely move heat into and out of one specific room:

  • Orientation and glazing: which way the windows face, how many there are, and what they’re made of
  • Insulation and air leakage: what’s in the walls and ceiling, and how much outside air finds its way in
  • Ceiling height and volume: the air the system has to condition, not the floor it stands on
  • Heat sources inside the room: people, appliances, lighting, and anything else giving off warmth
  • Local design conditions: the outdoor temperature and humidity the system has to work against in this parish

Two rooms of identical size on the same street can land on different answers. A west-facing sunroom with old single glazing is a different problem from an interior bedroom, whatever the tape measure says.

Step 1: Size the System to the Room, Not to a Rule of Thumb

Resist the instinct to round up. Rounding up feels like insurance and behaves like a defect, for the reasons in the section above. ACCA notes that even a carefully run calculation tends to land 10 to 15 percent high on its own, so adding another margin on top compounds an error that’s already there.

One feature works in your favour here. Most modern ductless mini-split systems run a variable-speed compressor, so the unit can throttle down and hold a low output for long stretches instead of slamming on and off. That widens the range of sizes that will behave well, but it doesn’t rescue a unit that’s badly oversized for the space.

If someone quotes you a size without ever measuring the room, asking about the windows, or looking at the insulation, they’ve guessed. Ask what the calculation was based on.

Step 2: Decide Between a Single Zone and a Multi-Zone Setup

A single-zone system is one outdoor unit paired with one indoor head, serving one room. A multi-zone system connects several indoor heads to a single outdoor unit, and each head runs to its own setting.

The choice is usually made by what you’re trying to fix:

  • One room that the ducts never served properly: a single zone is almost always the right answer, and the cheapest path to a comfortable room
  • An addition, sunroom, or converted garage with no ductwork: single zone if it’s one space, multi-zone if the addition has more than one room
  • A house where you want room-by-room control without replacing the ducted system: multi-zone, sized per room rather than per house
  • A whole house with sound existing ductwork: ductless often isn’t the better answer, and a ducted system with proper zone control may serve you better

Multi-zone deserves one warning. Each indoor head still has to be sized for its own room, and a common mistake is picking heads to match a catalogue combination rather than the rooms in front of you. The outdoor unit’s total capacity matters less than whether each head suits the space it’s hanging in.

Step 3: Check the Electrical Before Anything Is Ordered

Three things need confirming before the equipment arrives:

  • Dedicated circuit: the outdoor unit needs its own breaker at the correct rating, not a share of an existing circuit
  • Panel capacity: an older panel that’s already full may need work before it can take another dedicated circuit
  • Disconnect and routing: a service disconnect near the outdoor unit, and a workable route for the power run

In New Orleans housing stock this is a live issue rather than a formality. Plenty of the homes we work in have been added to, rewired in stages, or still carry a panel sized for a much smaller electrical load than a modern house puts on it.

Whoever does the electrical work should be qualified for it. On many installs that means a licensed electrician working alongside the mechanical trade, scheduled so neither is left waiting on the other.

Step 4: Pull the Permit and Confirm Who Is Allowed to Do the Work

This is the step people skip, and in New Orleans it isn’t optional. The City of New Orleans requires a mechanical permit to install, repair, replace, or alter air conditioning equipment, and it restricts who may apply: only a holder of the city’s Class “A” Mechanical License can pull one.

There’s a second requirement that sits on top of it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that adding or removing refrigerant during a mini-split installation, and connecting or disconnecting hoses or pre-charged lines, requires Section 608 technician certification. The EPA also restricts refrigerant sales for stationary appliances to certified technicians and the companies that employ them, so a homeowner can’t legally buy the refrigerant to do it themselves.

Together those two rules answer the most common question on this topic. A handy homeowner can mount a bracket and run a conduit chase. The refrigerant work and the permit both require credentials, and the permit has to be in place regardless of who does the rest.

One financial rule changed recently and still catches people out. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit under Section 25C, which covered qualifying heat pumps, applied to property placed in service before 31 December 2025, and it was terminated early by the legislation enacted on 4 July 2025. A system going in during 2026 doesn’t qualify. If you’re budgeting around a tax position, confirm it with a tax professional rather than with an article, ours included.

Step 5: Place the Indoor and Outdoor Units Where They Will Actually Work

Empty room with hardwood floors and two windows letting in daylightPlacement gets treated as a decorating decision and it’s a performance one. The indoor head needs clear air around it, room to throw across the space rather than into a wall or a wardrobe, and enough height to circulate.

The condensate line matters just as much. The indoor unit pulls water out of the air continuously through a New Orleans summer, and that water leaves through a drain line that relies on a consistent fall. A line run flat, kinked behind a cabinet, or discharging somewhere it can back up is the single most common source of a leak down an interior wall.

Outdoors, the unit needs clearance around it for airflow and service access, a stable mounting, and a line-set run kept within the manufacturer’s length and lift limits. Where the ground around the property is prone to standing water, we’d rather set the outdoor unit on a raised stand than on a slab at grade.

Close to the water, salt air is harder on an outdoor coil than an inland location, which makes the rinse-and-inspect part of a service visit count for more.

Step 6: Commission the System and Set the Maintenance Interval

A mini-split isn’t finished when it switches on and blows cold. Commissioning is where the install gets proven, and it’s the part a rushed job skips because the room already feels better.

The close-out should cover a handful of specific checks:

  • Evacuation: the line set pulled down to a proper vacuum before refrigerant is released into it, so no air or moisture is left in the circuit
  • Charge verification: the charge confirmed against the line-set length actually installed, not assumed from the factory figure
  • Condensate test: water run through the drain line to confirm it falls and discharges where it should
  • Airflow and settings: fan behaviour, mode settings, and controls checked and explained to you before anyone leaves

Then set the interval. A long cooling season at high humidity puts more running hours on a system here than the same unit sees further north, and filters and coils load up faster for it. Ductless heads have washable filters that want checking more often than most people expect.

Booking regular maintenance after the install is what keeps the sizing work from quietly going to waste on a dirty coil two summers later.

A mini-split installed properly in a New Orleans home is one of the quietest comfort upgrades available, particularly for the room nobody wanted to sit in through August. Installed badly, it becomes a cold, clammy room with a unit that never settles, and none of that is fixable with a thermostat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mini-Split Installation

Can I install a mini split by myself?

Not completely. The EPA requires Section 608 technician certification for adding or removing refrigerant and for connecting or disconnecting hoses or pre-charged lines, and refrigerant for these systems is only sold to certified technicians or their employers. In New Orleans there’s a second barrier: the mechanical permit for air conditioning work can only be pulled by a contractor holding a Class “A” Mechanical License from the city.

Do I need an electrician to install a mini split system?

Usually yes, because the outdoor unit needs its own dedicated circuit at the correct rating along with a service disconnect. On many jobs the mechanical work and the electrical work are handled by different trades and scheduled in sequence. If your panel is older or already full, the electrical side is worth checking before the equipment is ordered.

Is it better to undersize or oversize a mini split?

Neither, and oversizing is the more common mistake. ACCA notes that oversized equipment short cycles, which degrades humidity control and leaves indoor air cold and clammy, and in a hot-humid climate that moisture problem is the one you feel. A load calculation sized to the actual room avoids both failures rather than trading one for the other.

Do mini splits have to be vented outside?

Not in the way a furnace does, because a mini-split burns no fuel and produces no combustion gases to vent. What passes through the wall is a small penetration carrying the refrigerant lines, the power cable, and the condensate drain to the outdoor unit. That’s why these systems suit rooms where running a flue or a duct would be impractical.

How much does it cost to have a ductless mini split installed?

It depends on the capacity the room needs, on a single zone against several, how far the line set has to run, and what the existing electrical panel can already support.
