Why Here Is Different
Why Is New Orleans Harder On An Air Conditioner?
New Orleans combines a long cooling season with very high humidity, so a system here runs more hours per year and has to remove a great deal of moisture on top of lowering the temperature. That extra runtime is why sizing, drainage and duct sealing matter more here than in a dry climate.
01
Longer runtime, more wear
A long cooling season means the system runs far more hours per year than it would further north, and every one of those hours is wear on the same components.
02
The work is moisture, not just heat
A large share of what an air conditioner does here is pull humidity out of the air, not just lower the temperature. Sizing and drainage matter more because of it.
03
Oversizing backfires
An oversized unit cools quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to dry the air. The room hits the set temperature and still feels damp.
04
Ductwork carries the loss
Leaking ducts make the system work harder for the same comfort. We inspect the ducts before recommending anything, because that is often where the problem actually is.
05
Maintenance is not optional here
In this climate, a skipped tune-up is not a deferred cost; it is a failure waiting for the hottest week of the year. Catching it early is far cheaper than replacing it late.
06
Homes here are not uniform
Ceiling height, insulation, window exposure and how the ducts were originally run all change the answer. We measure on site rather than working from square footage alone.

My experience with Big Easy HVAC has been wonderful. The team was quick to come out and fix my air conditioning when it went down, they kept me updated on what needed fixing while doing so! And also pricing things fairly. I will definitely use them again next time around.

★★★★★
The service provided by Big Easy HVAC was extremely professional and prompt. When I initially called for service, I had a leaking air conditioner. My issue was determined to be a plumbing problem by the technician after a further examination. A plumber appointment was scheduled and the issue was resolved at a fair price after he contacted the office.

From the office to sales to techs, it was a great experience! I will definitely call them when issues arise in the future, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable HVAC company!

They came out to repair my new HVAC system and discovered several issues the other contractor had missed. Corrected the issues. The employees at Big Easy HVAC were very polite and professional. Despite temperatures below freezing a week later, the company still called to ensure everything was functioning properly. This is the company to call for all your HVAC needs!

Where Our Trucks Go
What Areas Around New Orleans Do We Serve?
New Orleans is home base, and we run service across the North Shore, the river parishes and up toward Baton Rouge. Pick your city for details on what we cover there.
Homeowners most often ask what we do, whether to repair or replace, what size system a house needs, and what a maintenance visit covers. The eight answers below address those questions, and our full FAQs page covers hours, booking and service areas.
What does Big Easy HVAC do?
At Big Easy HVAC, we are a heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor based in New Orleans, Louisiana. We install, repair and maintain residential and commercial systems, including central air conditioning, ductless mini-splits, furnaces, heat pumps, ductwork and commercial refrigeration, across the New Orleans metro, the North Shore, the river parishes and Baton Rouge.
Why do air conditioners work harder in New Orleans than in most of the country?
The cooling season in New Orleans is long and the humidity is high, so a system runs far more hours a year than it would further north and has to remove a great deal of moisture on top of cooling the air. That workload is why correct sizing, good drainage and sealed ducts matter so much, and why annual maintenance is not optional here.
Should I repair my air conditioner or replace it?
Repair usually makes sense when the system is still within its expected service life and the fault is a single component. Replacement becomes the better value when the same system has needed repeated repairs, when the compressor fails, or when the unit is old enough that parts are hard to source. We give you both numbers before you decide, and the estimate is free.
What size air conditioning system does my home need?
Size is calculated from the home, not from square footage alone. We look at the area being conditioned, ceiling height, insulation, window exposure and how the ductwork runs. An oversized system cools in short bursts and leaves the air damp, while an undersized one never catches up in August.
Do you work on both homes and businesses?
Yes. On the residential side we handle air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, ductless systems, ductwork, zone control and indoor air quality. On the commercial side we handle cooling, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, sheet metal ductwork and scheduled maintenance for commercial and industrial systems.
Is air duct cleaning worth it in a humid climate?
In a climate this humid, air duct cleaning is worth an inspection at least. Ducts in New Orleans homes collect dust and moisture, and leaking ductwork makes the system work harder to deliver the same comfort. We inspect the ducts first and tell you whether duct cleaning, sealing or neither is the right call.
What happens during an HVAC maintenance visit?
A maintenance visit covers inspecting and testing the system, checking that the ductwork is sealed, and confirming the unit is running as it should before we leave. Catching a weak component during an HVAC tune-up is far cheaper than replacing it after it fails in the middle of summer.
