How Your Air Conditioner Actually Spends Your Money
An air conditioner does not make cold. It moves heat out of the house and dumps it outside, and it removes water from the air on the way. In a climate with 3,206 cooling degree days, both jobs run long.
That matters because the cost is driven by run time, not by the temperature you select. A system that reaches your set point and shuts off is cheap. A system that never quite gets there runs continuously, and that is where bills go strange.
The Three Things That Extend Run Time
Almost every efficiency problem in a New Orleans home traces back to one of three things. Airflow is restricted, so the system moves less air per minute and has to run longer. Heat is leaking in faster than the unit can remove it, through gaps, glass and poorly insulated attic space. Or the equipment itself has lost capacity, through a dirty coil, low refrigerant or age.
The six steps below work through those in the order that costs you least. The first four are
things most homeowners can do without a technician. The last two need someone who can measure what
is happening inside the equipment.
One habit worth building before any of it: note what the house actually does. Which rooms lag, what
time of day the system stops keeping up, whether the air feels cool but damp. Those observations
narrow the problem faster than any single reading, and they cost nothing to collect.
Step 1: Change The Air Filter On A Schedule, Not A Feeling
A blocked filter is the most common and least expensive problem we find. Air cannot move through it at the rate the blower expects, so the system runs longer to move the same amount of air, and the coil behind it gets colder than it should.
Set a date rather than waiting until it looks dirty. In a New Orleans cooling season, once a month through summer is reasonable for a standard one-inch filter. Homes with pets or ongoing renovation dust need it more often.
Two things worth knowing. A filter that is too restrictive is its own problem, so higher MERV is
not automatically better. A dense filter in a system that was not designed for it starves the
blower, and you get the same long run times you were trying to avoid. If you want better filtration
than a basic filter provides, that is a conversation about the whole system rather than a
swap at the hardware store.
The second is fit. A filter sitting loose in its slot lets air bypass it entirely, which defeats
the point and lets dust reach the coil anyway. The filter should sit snug with no gap at the edges,
and the arrow on the frame should point in the direction the air travels, toward the blower.
When a coil does get dirty, the effect compounds. A layer of dust on the coil insulates it, so it
transfers less heat, so the system runs longer, so more air passes over it and more dust collects.
That is the loop a monthly filter change is preventing.
Step 2: Set The Thermostat To One Temperature And Leave It
The habit of dropping the thermostat several degrees to cool the house faster does not work. The system does not have a faster gear. It runs at one speed and simply runs longer, and you will usually forget to set it back.
Pick a set point you can live with and hold it. Every degree you can accept in summer takes
measurable run time off the system, and run time is what the meter charges you for.
There is a real limit to setback in this climate, and it is worth understanding. In a dry region
you can let a house drift several degrees while you are out and recover it quickly. Here, when the
temperature rises the humidity comes with it, and pulling that moisture back out takes the system
considerably longer than lowering the temperature did. Push the setback too far and you spend the
evening waiting for the house to feel right rather than just be cool. A modest setback works.
A dramatic one often does not.
A programmable or smart thermostat helps because it does the remembering. Set a slightly higher temperature for the hours the house is empty and have it return before you do. Zone control systems take this further by treating parts of the house separately, so you are not conditioning bedrooms all afternoon.
Step 3: Close The Gaps Before You Blame The Equipment
Cool air escaping and hot, humid air leaking in will defeat a perfectly healthy system. Around New Orleans the usual entry points are attic hatches, recessed lighting, the gaps where plumbing and wiring pass through walls, and the frames of older windows and doors.
Attic insulation matters more here than people expect. An uninsulated attic over a conditioned ceiling radiates heat downward all afternoon, long after the sun has moved.
Attic hatches deserve specific attention because they are so often missed. A pull-down stair or a
simple plywood hatch is usually a large uninsulated hole in the ceiling of a conditioned house,
sitting directly beneath the hottest space in the building.
Ceiling penetrations are the other overlooked group. Recessed light housings, bathroom fans and the
gaps around plumbing stacks all connect conditioned space to attic space. Individually they are
small. Added together across a house they are equivalent to leaving a window open.
This step is also the one you can mostly do yourself, with weatherstripping, foam and sealant, and
it costs very little compared to what it returns. It is worth doing before you spend money on
equipment, because sealing reduces the load the equipment has to meet. Buying a larger system to
overcome a leaky house is the expensive way to solve the wrong problem.
Step 4: Give The System Room To Breathe
Airflow problems are not only about filters. Furniture pushed against return vents, closed registers in unused rooms, and boxes stacked around the indoor unit all restrict the system in the same way.
Closing vents to save money is a common mistake. It does not reduce the work, it raises pressure in the duct system and pushes more air out through any leak that already exists.
Outside, the condenser needs clearance. Clear the leaves, cut back the shrubs, and leave open
space around the unit so it can reject heat instead of recycling its own warm air. A condenser
boxed in by a fence or a hedge sits in a pocket of the heat it just expelled, which raises the
pressure it works against and lowers what it can deliver indoors.
The coil itself collects cottonwood, grass clippings and general debris across a season. Rinsing it
gently with a hose, with the power off, restores airflow that has been lost gradually enough that
nobody noticed it going.
Registers are worth walking once a year as well. Rugs creep over floor vents, furniture gets moved
against returns, and curtains fall across supply registers. None of it is dramatic on its own and
all of it makes the blower work against resistance it was not sized for.
Step 5: Deal With The Ductwork And The Drain
In a humid climate the parts you never see cause the most trouble. Air ducts running through a hot attic lose cooled air through every unsealed joint, and that loss is invisible from inside the house.
The condensate drain line is the other one. Your system pulls a great deal of water out of New Orleans air, and that water has to leave. A line that clogs with algae backs up, and most systems then shut themselves off or spill into the pan. Flushing it before and during cooling season prevents a shutdown on the hottest week of the year.
Insulation on the duct runs matters as much as the sealing. A sealed but uninsulated duct crossing
an attic that reaches well over a hundred degrees is still losing capacity to the air around it,
just not through a hole. In a house where one end is always warmer, the duct route is often the
reason rather than the equipment.
If your rooms are dusty no matter how often you clean, air duct cleaning
is worth considering, and it pairs naturally with indoor air quality
work. It is also worth being honest about what duct cleaning does and does not fix: it addresses
what is in the ducts, not leaks in them. Those are two different jobs and only one of them shows up
on your power bill.
For homes where adding ductwork is impractical, ductless systems
avoid the distribution losses entirely, which is worth knowing before paying to fix ducts that were
compromised from the start.
Step 6: Book Maintenance Before The Season, Not During It
The first five steps are things you can largely handle. This one is not, and it is the one that protects the rest.
A maintenance visit checks the things a homeowner cannot: refrigerant charge, coil condition, electrical connections, blower performance and the drain. A system low on refrigerant will still blow cool air while running far longer than it should, and nothing inside the house tells you.
Book it in spring, before the first stretch of real heat. Once the season turns, every HVAC company
in the metro is working through a queue, and a tune-up becomes a repair. The same visit costs the
same money in April and delivers considerably more value, because in April it is preventing
something rather than responding to it.
What a proper visit should cover is worth knowing so you can tell whether you got one. Refrigerant
charge measured rather than eyeballed, the condenser and evaporator coils inspected and cleaned,
electrical connections checked and tightened, capacitor condition tested, blower and airflow
assessed, and the condensate drain cleared and confirmed flowing. A visit that consists of a filter
change and a glance is not maintenance.
If the system is well past a decade old and the repairs are stacking up, that is a different conversation. Air conditioning replacement and heat pump options are worth pricing before an emergency makes the choice for you.
